AI traffic to travel is up 194%. Here’s what car rental operators need to know.
June 25, 2026The conversation at this year’s International Car Rental Show was AI. Every vendor, every operator, every session. After years of incremental progress in car rental technology, it feels like something has shifted. This post covers what we’re actually seeing in practice, not just what’s being talked about.
What We Saw at the International Car Rental Show
ICRS was in Dallas this year for the first time. From the conversations there, it sounds like the last time too, with the conference returning to Las Vegas next year.
Attendance was down, and for the first time there were more suppliers in the room than car rental operators. That shift changes the dynamic of the show. It’s harder to get a read on what operators are actually worried about when the room is dominated by vendors pitching to them.
The big theme, without question, was AI. Every software vendor was talking about it. Most of the AI we saw was pointed inward: pricing optimisation, fleet utilisation, operational efficiency, damage management. Tools to help car rental companies run their back office better. That’s valuable work and it’s obviously important to any operator.
What very few vendors are building is AI focused on the space between a car rental business and its customers. That’s where we operate, and it’s where we see the biggest opportunity right now. When a renter has a question at 11pm, or wants to change their booking on a Sunday morning, or needs to cancel last-minute, that interaction currently either goes unanswered or lands on a human agent’s queue. That’s the problem we’re solving.
One other thing worth noting from the show: car rental operators are re-evaluating their reservation software at a higher rate than we’ve seen in previous years. Switching backends is a significant undertaking, but your Carcloud.com website is designed to connect to different reservation platforms, so it’s not necessarily a barrier to change. If that’s something you’re considering, let us know early so we can plan ahead with you.
Our core business remains building the best car rental ecommerce platform on the market, and we have some significant developments in the pipeline that we’ll be sharing soon.
New Research: AI-Driven Traffic Is Growing Fast in Travel
Adobe Digital Insights published their Q3 AI Traffic Trends Report this month. We’ve written a detailed breakdown of what it means specifically for car rental operators. Read the full breakdown here.
The headline numbers are significant:
- Travel is the fastest-growing sector for AI-driven traffic, up 194% year on year
- The AI conversion gap in travel has narrowed 67% since late 2024: visitors arriving from AI tools are now much more likely to book than they were a year ago
- Car rental already leads most travel sectors on AI citation readability: vehicle pages score 71%, FAQ pages 72%
- Visitors arriving from AI sources spend 70% more time on site and are 41% less likely to bounce
A few things stand out here. First, the conversion gap narrowing is significant. A year ago, the common argument was that AI-referred traffic was curious but didn’t convert. That’s changing quickly. Second, the readability scores for car rental are genuinely encouraging. Operators with well-structured vehicle pages and clear FAQ content are already better placed to be cited by AI tools than they might realise.
The implication is straightforward: if a customer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend a car rental company in their city, what comes back is based on what those tools can understand about your website. Operators who’ve invested in their vehicle pages and kept their FAQs current are ahead of the game.
What the Carcloud AI Agent Does Today
Earlier this quarter, we went live with the first customers on the Carcloud AI Agent. It sits on any car rental website, handles customer enquiries around the clock, in multiple languages, connected directly to the reservation system. No scripts, no decision trees. It understands what the customer is asking and responds accurately.
Here’s what it handles right now:
Booking retrieval. Renters can look up their booking, check the details, and ask questions like “when do I have to return it?” The AI cross-references their rental details, your terms and conditions, and your knowledge base to answer accurately.
Modification requests. The AI captures the full request, shows live pricing for the vehicle or date change, logs the reason, and queues it for your team to process. No phone call, no waiting on hold.
Full bookings. For pay-on-arrival and invoice accounts, the AI takes the customer from enquiry to confirmed booking without any staff involvement, including answering questions and upselling insurance along the way.
Cancellations. The AI guides the renter through the process, captures their reason for cancelling, and notifies your team. The cancellation reason data is a useful by-product: it gives you a clearer picture of customer behaviour than you’d normally get.
Knowledge base questions. Any question your customers ask can be answered using content you’ve added or information the AI takes directly from your website. The AI also identifies gaps in your knowledge base automatically, so your team knows exactly what to fill in.
All of this, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in any language your customers speak.
If you’re handling out-of-hours enquiries manually, or if your team is spending time on modification requests that follow the same pattern every time, this is worth a look. There’s a one-minute walkthrough at the end of this post, or book a demo to talk it through.
New: Control How AI Understands Your Website
One practical update worth knowing about: you can now set your llms.txt file directly from the SEO menu in your Carcloud.com admin panel.
If you haven’t come across the term, llms.txt is a proposed standard that tells AI crawlers and large language models which parts of your website they should and shouldn’t reference. As AI-powered search becomes a bigger part of how people find and choose services, making sure your site is correctly understood by those systems is worth a few minutes of your time.
The support article covers how to set it up.
A Note on Where Car Rental AI Actually Matters
There’s a lot of noise about AI in the industry right now. Much of what gets discussed isn’t easy to translate into something that moves the needle for your business.
There’s strong work being done on the operational side of car rental: fleet management, pricing optimisation, damage assessment. There are good vendors focused on those problems. Our focus has always been the link between your business and your customers: your website, your marketing, and the customer interactions that happen across every channel before and after a booking is made.
Many car rental operators are already using AI to help produce marketing content. Making sure your website is structured so AI search tools can find, understand, and recommend your business is a direct extension of that work, and the research covered earlier in this post shows how quickly it’s becoming a real driver of bookings. Then there are the customer interactions: enquiries that come in outside business hours, the repetitive work involved in every modification or cancellation, and the manual effort your customer service team handles on every interaction.
That’s the lens we’re applying when we decide what to build. If you want to talk through how any of it applies to your business, get in touch.
